Stockholm Guide

Stockholm is the capital of Sweden, located on the south east coast of Sweden. It is the largest city in Sweden, with a population of 774,000 within the municipal borders, and with an urban area population of 1.2 million and a metropolitan area population of 1.7 million. As the capital, Stockholm is the site of the Government and the parliament of Sweden. It is also the residence of the head of state, King Carl XVI Gustaf.

Stockholm is located on Sweden's east coast, where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. The central parts of the city consists of fourteen islands, all part of the archipelago. The geographical city centre is virtually situated on the water, in the bay Riddarfjärden. (Coordinates: 59°21'N 18°4'E.)

During 1998 Stockholm was designated as the European City of Culture.
