The country was named after the Spanish word for "The Savior" and its territory was known prehispanically as Cuscatlán.Civilization in ancient Cuscatlán, in which territory was founded El Salvador in the 16th century, dates from the pre-Columbian time, around 1500 years B.C.E., according to evidence provided by the Mayan ruins of Tazumal and Chalchuapa.
